The Muse of Writing

What sparks your imaginiation? What gets your "golden pen" moving to write? The one thing that helps you create that image, craft your words to paint the picture, that is your muse.
For me, it is my family, my dogs, my friends and colleagues and often times, my students.
They are all my purpose and my inspiration for writing. It gives me great satisfaction to put my words down on paper and feel the impact of what I have written.
I keep my notebook with me, I jot down quotes and "snatches of talk" that might trigger those anytime stories, and I try to surround myself with positive thoughts. I allow myself to write and edit later. I wear my "1teacherwriting" necklace and my "live the writerly life" necklace to remind me of my muse.

The muse of writing begins with our memory but has to connect with our mental ability. It only needs that quiet spot, away from all the stress and pressures of daily life in order to thrive.
When I need to find my muse sometimes I seek a tranquil spot, even if in my own mind. Often times I realize that my muse is hiding in places I least expect, for instance, while I am vaccuming or paying the bills, throwing the balls for the Labs or getting their supper, listening to my favorite songs or the sweet chorus of birds on a clear morning. Simple, free, mindless activites that help my memory and my emotions sync and allow my muse to waken.

"I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions."

James Michener
