In Search of Summer

The other day I spotted a colored leaf on the lawn. With a heavy heart, I knew only too well the meaning of that leaf. Somehow, as I had been waiting for Summer to arrive, Fall slipped it's tenacious fingers in between droplets of rain and grass too wet to mow. My summer attire had been shorts with waterproof boots and a raincoat. Now, as August draws to a close, the heat is on and I find myself thinking what a cruel twist of fate this season has played this year. Next week, a new school year begins and instead of the cooler temperatures approaching, I wonder that somehow the Summer I had searched for all these weeks is tapping at my door. I feel like screaming at her.
"Where have you been? Where were you when I wanted to jump in my pool? Where were you when my gardens needed your sunlight instead of drenching rain?"
On the other hand, it does make me realize that Summer must not just be about the weather but rather a state of mind. A time to take a breath. A time to connect with family and friends. A time to do all those things that get put off during the school year. A time to do -nothing-(sometimes). And that's ok.
