In Ralph Fletcher's "A Writer's Notebook", he devotes a whole chapter to 'snatches of talk'.
This seemed to be such an appealing idea that I set aside the last pages of my writer's notebook to doing just that, collecting snatches of talk, those bits and pieces of conversation that catch your attention and who knows when you might find a writer's use for them.
Here are some of mine:
This is something I say everyday to my two youngest Labs, as I leave for school.
"Bye bye punkin pies, mama loves you"
Hold your horses
Lucky Duck
Hippity Hop and Jiggidy Jog
Drive me crazy
A colleague shared a story about her teenage daughter saying,
"I hate you....a little bit"
It struck me since my youngest son, in high school, would say to me,
"Mom, why are you just standing there?"
Tables are turned
Can you, or may you? (my mother used to always ask us that)
Where did you get that cold? (my grandmother would ask this)
"LIFE is like a train ride....starts and stops and whistles along the way."
