Anybody know what this is? Not to date myself but I do and perhaps this is the way we should go back to with true 'recycling'.
It is a garbage can from the 50's. There was a heavy metal cover like a manhole cover and a foot pedal to lift the lid and throw all your household garbage(food) into it. At my parents' house in MA, it was located right outside the side dining room door before the breezeway and garage were added on. Once a week the garbage man came and emptied the underground pail into his truck(and yes it sure did stink) and continued on his route collecting all the neighbors garbage to use for feed for his pigs.
We also had lots of weekly home deliveries too, and not the Amazon type. There was the Milkman who came 2-3 x's a week and delivered milk in glass bottles. In MA we had Hood Milk and it was delivered by the same driver in his truck(I can't remember his name but we all called him by his first name, even the kids) He would take the empty bottles and fill the stainless steel milk box with the filled bottles.
But my all time favorite delivery was the Eggman. He would bring the eggs every week and my mother would pay him. He always came right up to the door to deliver them and would stop to chat. He knew our names and I wish I could remember his.
My mother had other delivery services that would come every few weeks. The Fuller Brush Man(a typical traveling salesman who had a sleek convertible Cadillac and his leather suitcase filled with the newest cleaning products, and even the Avon Lady named Olive.
Moms were always home, one family car for Dad to go to work. Those of us who remember the 50's and 60's understand all of this. It was the very best of times. The very best.
