Summer Memories of Flashlight Tag

Flashlight Tag

Summer nights when lightning bugs and mosquitoes ruled the air, our favorite neighborhood game was flashlight tag. There were generally 6-8 of us and we always played in our yard. I don't remember what the rules were; there must have been some. Similar to tag, I imagine and obviously we used a flashlight. The boundaries must have been our front and back yard. Our allies were the blinking glow of the lightning bugs and our enemies, the buzzing mosquitoes determined to leave their mark on every inch of our exposed skin. But back then, our only concern was the annoying itch the following day which our mothers' would dab with candy pink calamine lotion.
The game would end only when my mother would holler out, “Time to come in”, not because there was a tv show we didn't want to miss or a video game we had to play.
Our friends dashed home, flashlights bobbing in the darkness. No one called my mother to say their child had arrived safe and sound. It was the 50's. Life was good.
